General Security Information

The image above illustrates a property that I used during this exercise. The starting point to any security assessment is to evaluate the big picture.

Assessing what will create your Secure Environment

bulletEnvironment - The environment is critical to begin the assessment as this determines the scope of the secure environment.

Take off the blinders here and work on determining how you can deter undesirable actions. When looking at environment be sure to not only look at human actions but also natures actions. Some key things to look at are fire, rain, lightning and wind as any of these events can cause loss off power, water, telephone, or shelter.

Note any of the actions that you feel would jeopardize your secure environment and then note actions you can take to reduce the likelihood of the event occurring or at least minimize it's affect.

bulletLighting - This action is critical to a secure environment for multiple reasons. Many people are still afraid of the dark especially when they cannot see what is out there.

Good lighting is a stop sign to would be burglars due to risk analysis. Burglars are not looking to be detected in the process of committing a burglary as this increases the chance of them getting identified and caught.

Good lighting reduces the likelihood of you tripping over or accidentally running over an unseen objects.

bulletBarriers - There are pros and cons to barriers that you need to be aware of.  If you cannot see you neighbors from your house, they cannot see when someone is breaking into your house. We all appreciate our privacy and we consider that to be an important part of our secure environment. Utilizing detection devices to alert us of these unseen actions can substantially reduce the risk of the event occurring. As we stated in the lighting section, "Burglars are not looking to be detected in the process of committing a burglary as this increases the chance of them getting identified and caught".

bulletCurb Appeal - While good curb appeal is great when selling your property it can be very inviting to burglars.

It is always a good idea to keep valuables from view from outside. Ensuring that valuables such as electronics, jewelry, and collectables cannot be viewed from the windows is always a good idea.

It is always a good idea to keep your garage doors closed when they are not in use. Power tools can be easy targets for walk by burglars and many times the missing items are not noticed for some time. They can also get an inventory of items for burglary in the future. Most burglaries are planned events not spur of the moment actions.

bulletVacancy - I use the term vacancy to mean that the property in currently unoccupied. This could be while during the day, in the evening, or possibly vacant for days at a time when you are on vacation. Making a property look occupied during vacancy could be as easy as having lights come on and off during scheduled times. It is always a good idea to have someone stop by the property at least once a day and it should be at random times. Always keep in mind, "Burglars are not looking to be detected in the process of committing a burglary as this increases the chance of them getting identified and caught. Keep them guessing by being vigilant regarding your secure environment.
